Watermelon Art
Give each child a circle cut out of green construction paper and a slightly smaller circle cut out of red construction paper. Have the children glue their red circles on top of their green ones. Then let them glue watermelon seeds all over their red circles.
Planting Watermelon Seeds
Let the children spoon potting soil into egg cartons. Have them plant one or two watermelon seeds in each section. Then let them water their seeds and check them daily. Soon the seeds will sprout and grow into small watermelon plants.
Watermelon Weighing
Buy a few different sized watermelons and let the children weigh them. Have the children compare the weights and sizes of the melons.
What Am I?
Cut a large circle out of green felt, a slightly smaller circle out of white felt, a still smaller circle out of red felt and several seed shapes out of black felt. Place the felt shapes in front of a flannelboard. As you read the poem below, put the appropriate shapes on the flannelboard.
Great big green ball
Sitting in the sun.
Inside, a white ball
Just for fun.
Next comes a red ball
Just for me,
Filled with black spots.
What can it be?
Black spots, black spots,
Spit 'em at the sun.
Spitting black spots
Is lots of fun.
Red ball, red ball,
Juicy and sweet.
Watch out now
While I eat and eat.
White ball, white ball,
Green ball, too,
I throw them away
When I'm through.
Can you guess
What I'm tellin'?
My great big ball
Is a watermelon!
Watermelon Slices
Draw from one to ten watermelon slices on ten white index cards. Write the numbers 1 to 10 on ten other index cards. Mix up the cards and let the children take turns matching the numbers with the pictures.
The Watermelon Song
Sung to : "Frere Jacques"
Watermelon, watermelon,
Tastes so yummy, tastes so yummy.
Green on the outside,
Red on the inside,
With black seeds, with black seeds.
Picking up Watermelons
Sung to : "The Paw Paw Patch"
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Pick up a watermelon, put it in the basket,
Way down yonder in the watermelon patch.
Have the children pretend to pick up watermelons and place them in a basket while singing the song.
Giant Fruit Cup
Have the children help make a huge fruit cup. Let them scoop out the insides of a watermelon, remove the seeds and set the fruit aside. Help them cut up other fruits such as apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes. Then let them mix the fruit chunks with the scooped-out watermelon and spoon the fruit mixture back into the watermelon shell.
Watermelon Popsicles
Blend 1 cup seedless watermelon chunks, 1 cup orange juice and 1 cup water in a blender. Pour into small paper cups. Place in freezer and when partially frozen, insert small plastic spoons or popsicle sticks for handles. When completely frozen, pour hot water over the bottoms of the cups to remove the frozen treats.
